      Osteotomy

Orthopedic surgeons can use the osteotomy module to plan corrective osteotomy surgical procedures of the patella, tibia and femur, using the open wedge or closed wedge technique. Axial malalignments of the knee joint are found automatically, and realignments are handled automatically or manually. This can aid in knee pain relief, halt the progression of knee arthritis and improve range of motion in active patients and younger patients, while potentially delaying the need for total knee replacement surgery.

An integrated database makes it easy to select suitable osteosynthesis and knee replacement components such as nails, plates, screws and more. With mediCAD®, merging partial x-ray and arthroscopy images to create a complete long-leg image is a very simple and intuitive process.

      Autoplan Osteotomy

All dimensions and parts of the knee are determined after automatic recognition of the relevant landmarks using the “Autoplan Osteotomy” function. Axial malalignments can be corrected by specifying the relevant cuts and bone grafts. This realignment function allows mediCAD to facilitate rapid and efficient preoperative endoprosthetic and joint replacement planning for orthopedic surgeons.

      Osteotomy according to Dror Paley

An analysis determines the type, number, size and localization of the knee osteotomy surgeries. When correction is complete, all joint-related mechanical weight-bearing axes and joint tangents must lie within the normal range.

Common methods: Open Wedge or Closed Wedge

Malalignments can be calculated using the expanded Osteotomy module according to Dror Paley. All pre- and post-operative results are shown. The process has been used for years at www.gelenkzentrum-wiesbaden.de and offers the following advantages:

      • Analysis of the preoperative situation
      • Determination of CORA/NCORA, single or multiple osteotomies
      • Simulation of postoperative results.
      • Automatic calculation of optimal angles.
      • Determination of the apex and actual angle of deformity from the AP and sagittal views.
      • Interactively select and evaluate the correction yourself.

Dror Paley’s principle of deformity correction are based on the mathematical principles and studies of Prof. Dr. Dror Paley/Baltimore/USA and was developed for mediCAD by Prof. Dr. med. J. Pfeil and Prof. Dr. B. Gladbach/Wiesbaden.

      Torsion measurement

The “Torsion measurement” function in the whole leg module enables measurement of internal or external torsion of the femur, tibia, patella and kneecap. This information is helpful when performing corrective osteotomy of the knee and can be directly applied intraoperatively. The measurement of the TT-TG interval over the distance between the sulcus of the trochlea and the tibial tuberosity can be included in cases of patellar instability.
